Kala Cotton – where heritage meets sustainability, and fashion embraces the future.

Introducing our exquisite Kala Cotton  – versatile yardage, a true embodiment of sustainable luxury and timeless elegance.

Discover the allure of this ancient and indigenous cotton variety, cultivated in the heart of the Indian subcontinent for centuries. Unlike conventional cotton, our Kala Cotton is nurtured through traditional, organic farming methods, embracing a harmony with nature that benefits both the planet and the communities involved.

With its remarkable drought-resistant nature, Kala Cotton thrives in arid and semi-arid regions, making it an eco-conscious choice that conserves precious water resources. Grown without the use of harmful chemicals, this exceptional cotton ensures purity and authenticity in every fiber.

Kala Cotton boasts a unique shorter staple length, infusing our textiles with a distinctive character and unparalleled comfort. Its rich cultural heritage further adds a touch of artistry and craftsmanship to each piece, connecting you to a legacy of ancient weaving traditions.

Kala means 'black' in some Indian languages,  referring to the empty cotton pod. Spinning and weaving Kala cotton is more time-consuming than weaving long-staple American or genetically modified cotton, the process can only be done by hand.

The fabric itself is unbleached with a soft oatmeal shade. It is extremely soft and has a gentle flow.

      Kala shirt

I sewed a buttuon-up shirt for myself. I have sewed shirts from many different fabrics. This Kala fabric is the best of them all. To my surprise it feels better on the skin than linen or pima cotton fabrics that I have used. The fabric, in my opinion, feels like a combination of linen and cotton seersucker-it's like linen but has the comfort of cotton. It was also a joy to sew this (I use only a straight stitch, no serger). I will sew more like this, as I already ordered more Kala fabric...
