Our Matka Handwoven Silk per meter.

Matka silk, a natural, matte, and lightly textured silk fabric is renowned for its earthy elegance and unique character. Spun from Bombyx mori silk cocoons, this fabric gives a versatile base for dyeing and printing.

With every thread carefully handwoven, our Matka Silk showcases the artistry and creativity of traditional weaving communities. A tribute to the rich cultural heritage that weaves together stories of Indian craftsmanship and heritage.

DekelDyes is committed to sustainability and ethical practices. By choosing our Matka Silk Handwoven Shawls, you support fair trade principles and contribute to the livelihoods of skilled artisans, helping preserve their centuries-old craft and sericulture.

Use for clothing, mufflers, pillows, and more. Matka silk has a lot of sericin which will take up dye like a charm. Pieces dyed on Matka always look very saturated with color.

There is no need to scour this fabric, but I advise on soaking overnight in a bucket with bran to remove the rice starch they use to press the fabric.

Handwoven fabrics come with the charm and feel of handmade: minor flaws and irregularities are part of this characterful fabric.

      Matka buttoned up shirt

I sewed this shirt myself. As always (for men's shirts) I used my go to pattern : Simplicity 8753, with some changes, like the mandarin collar. I have written another review here for the same shirt, but with Kala cotton fabric. This one feels also great. I have noticed that the handwoven fabric feels different than commercial fabrics (I sewed lots of shirts...), it feels like wearing a t-shirt (knit). I think that it's because the tension of the warp threads is different-more relaxed.
