Weld (Reseda Luteola)

Natural finely ground dye powder produced from Reseda Luteola also known as Dyers Weld, Dyers Rocket, and Dyers Mignonette. Weld produces an excellent light and washfast yellow and is a strong clear yellow to combine with indigo for emerald and leaf greens. Reseda is one of those old world dye stuffs known through the ages.

Use 10% wof (weight of fabric) of weld powder for a light shade.

20-50% wof will give a rich, deep yellow.

100 grams of Weld powder will dye 1 kilo of textile light yellow, and 1/2 a kilo of textile deep yelllow.

Active dye component; luteolin.

Mordant protein fiber with alum 15% WOF.

For cellulose fiber pre mordant with tannin and aluminium acetate.

Copper mordant at 5% will give deep mustard yellow.

Post mordant with 1% ferrous sulfate for khaki greens.

Weld loves slightly hard water. Adding finely ground chalk (about two teaspoons for a gallon)  brightens the weld colour, especially if your tapwater is soft.

A second round in the dye bath will give soft yellow hues.

This Weld powder is grown and processed in Europe and is an approved dyestuff for the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS )
