Madder is an ancient red fabric dye and is also the source of medicine used in Ayurveda, known in Hindi as Manjith. This madder different from Rubia tinctorum, is grown in India and has a little more of an orange shade than R. tinctorum.

Use in the dye bath is similar to regular madder powder.

 

 

Use leftover madder dye baths to feed your organic indigo vat.

 

Mordanting is advised as follows;

Protein - 20% WOF Potassium Aluminium

Cellulose - 10% WOF Aluminium Acetate.

 

Active dye components; Alizarin and purpurin.

Securely packed in a re-sealable zip bag for easy use and storage

 

Use; Soak roots in cold water overnight. Slowly heat hard water with the dye paste to 60ºC and keep for 1.5 hours. Let cool down. The dye is now ready for use.

 

Always soak barks and roots overnight before heating. Use a dye bag when dyeing wool or the bits will get stuck in the fibers. Heat slowly to below a boil, boiling may dull colors. No mordanton wool  is needed but alum will intensify and brighten the dye results.
