Bhujodi weaving is a traditional form of handloom weaving originating from the master weavers in the Kachchh desert of India. It is known for its intricate and meaningful designs designs in traditional materials.

Bhujodi weaving is a craft practiced by almost 200 weavers of the 500 year old Meghwal community. Traditions and knowledge are passed down from father to son, generation to generation. The women in the family spin the yarn on a traditional spinning wheel (charkha) to prepare the warp. Once the men are done with weaving, the women assist in adding embroidery in contrasting colors such as indigo.

The design of the shawl, is a combination of alternated colored weft threads, supplemented weft and hand stitching (called Macchi-Kandho (Fish-Bone) featuring traditional motifs such as

Biscuit

Jhaad  draws inspiration from nature and resembles a tree.

Dhunglo representing the mountain

Khungri  is a motif designed to look like a ‘zig-zag’line.

Landhar representing a slithering snake.

Panjka two opposite triangles meeting in the middle.

(see also the illustration in the pictures)

These statement shawls are finished with beautifully handmade tassels. Because these handmade shawls are a deep cultural expression of the weaver, no two shawls are the same.
